How do you notice that one suffers from sleep disorders ?

I first started having sleeping problems during my high school and university years. Either I couldn’t fall asleep, even though I was tired or I would wake up in the middle of the night, unable to find my sleep again.

Later, when problems with friends or family arose, and on top I was under pressure at work, that pattern got worse. I started losing my ability to sleep easily. I couldn’t fall asleep even though I was super exhausted; I would wake up in the middle of the night and couldn’t fall asleep again; worries, negative self-talk, endless todo-lists or physical unrest waking me up and keeping me awake. When I finally fell asleep, my alarm would ring and it was again time to get up, after too little restful sleep.

Then, over time, I became more and more stressed and exhausted during my days, because I hadn’t slept well or enough -it became a vicious circle. I was so unbalanced and stressed, just by the thought of again not being able to sleep, that my bad and stressful days would nourish my bad nights. That again nourished another bad day and so on….
…and on top of it I didn’t even realize the madness I was in.

I didn’t acknowledge having a problem. I was not facing the situation. I was in total denial. Of course, you cannot solve a problem, if you deny it, right? So, obviously things got bad.

I was not functional anymore. Everything in my life was getting worse. Challenges at work became unsupportable. I couldn’t face any conflict at work, at home or even with good friends. Keeping the façade up and not expressing anything to anyone. Severe skin problems and other physical diseases arose and became unbearable. 

It happened the way it had to, I had a breakdown and was forced to pause and change something – actually, everything!

It became my top priority to find good sleep and a state of well-being without any medication or harming substances. I wanted to rely on myself: I mean, my own mental and physical capabilities to build a healthy sleep pattern and an extraordinary, but balanced life. I wanted to activate the self-healing powers, that lay in me.

Over the years I studied and practiced many different schools of thought, methods and other tools. Some helped, some didn’t. Some worked for a while and still, I didn’t stick to them. I researched deeper, saw different therapists, deepened my yoga and meditation practice and explored traditional healing methods from all over the globe.

I came to realize that everything plays together, the thoughts in my mind, the food I would eat and also the physical sensations I had after food or workout. And also, how my feelings and emotions and interactions with others play into the complexity of a good sleep and a great life. Eventually, I found the right formula for my healthy sleep and a sustainably happy life.

Now, I experience again, that when I sleep well, I am so much stronger and prepared for whatever which challenge the next day and my life will bring. Whenever I don’t sleep well, I know exactly why and can help myself within minutes. Being able to help myself, made me so much more confident and stronger about encountering any (not just sleeping) problems.

Friends and yoga students started asking me for help with their sleeping problems and anxiety issues; and then some coaching clients admitted being so exhausted during their days and not knowing how to find restful moments anymore. I guided them through my 8-step method and it helped each one of them. So, now I want to make these methods and tools, that helped them and me, available to you and a broader audience.
